BARBERING COURSE

CURRICULUM FOR BARBERING COURSE CIP#12.0409 - 1,000 HOURS

The curriculum for students enrolled in the barbering program consists of one thousand (1,000) clock hours of Practical Operations and Technical Instruction, which will include at a minimum the state mandated subject hours listed in the chart below. Instruction will cover the art and science of barber from techniques in hair, skin care and shaving to business skills, and health and safety practices. This program of study satisfies the requirements of Section 7316 of the California Barbering and Cosmetology Act..

 

Such technical instruction and practical operations shall include:

SUBJECT OF TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION & MINIMUM HOURS OF TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION:
  1. The Barbering Act and Rules & Regulations: 50Hrs
    (The subject of laws and regulations shall include, but is not limited to, the following issues: The Barbering and Cosmetology Act and the Board’s Rule and Regulations.)

  2. Health and Safety/Hazardous Substances : 50Hrs
    (Shall include training in chemicals and health establishments, material safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals and preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and agencies, ergonomics, communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS & Hepatitis B.)

  3. Disinfection and Sanitation: 20Hrs
    (Shall include procedures to protect the health and safety of the consumer as well as the technician. The ten required minimum operations shall entail performing all necessary functions for disinfecting instruments and equipment as specified in Sections 979 and 980. Disinfection should be emphasized through-out the entire training period and must be performed before use of all instruments and equipment.)

  4. Hair Coloring & Bleaching: 20Hrs & 20Hrs
    (Use of semi-permanent , demi-permanent and temporary color, PD and strand tests, safety precautions, formula mixing, tinting, bleaching, high and low lights and use of dye removers.)

  5. Permanent Waving: 40Hrs
    (Hair analysis, acid and alkaline permanent waving, chemical straightening including sodium hydroxide and other base solutions

  6. Chemical Straightening: 10Hrs
    (Including instruction on coloring, straightening, waving, bleaching, hair analysis, predisposition and strand tests, safety precautions, formula mixing, and the use of dye removers.)

  7. Hairstyling/Thermal/Hot Comb: 20Hrs
    (Hair analysis, shampooing, comb outs straightening, waving, curling, hot curling irons and blower styling.)

  8. Wet Hair Styling: 20Hrs
    (hair analysis, finger waving, pin curls, comb outs/ waving curling with hot combs.)

  9. Hair Cutting: 25Hrs
    (Use of scissors, razor (shaper), electrical clippers/trimmers and thinning (tapering) shears for wet and dry cutting.)

  10. Facial/Massage Rolling Cream: 20Hrs
    (Applying aftershave antiseptic following facial services, massaging the clients face, rolling cream massages.)

  11. Hair/Facial Shave: 40Hrs
    (Preparation and performance-preparing hair for shaving, assessing the condition of the clients skin, performing shaving.)

 

 

100 HOUR MAX OF ADDITIONAL TRAINING WILL BE GIVEN BY THE FOLLOWING SUBJECT MATTER:

Mgmt., communication skills that includes professional ethics, salesmanship, decorum, record keeping, client service record cards and preparing a resume, employment development, modeling, desk and reception, and care and other subjects relating to Barbering field.

 

PREPARATION (15 HOURS OF TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION):

The subject of preparation shall include, but not limited to the following issues: Client consultation, intake procedures, contraindications, professionalism, client record keeping, pre & post-operative care, CPR/AED, salon and barbershop skills

BARBER PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE

  1. Acquire knowledge of laws and rules' regulating the established California's barber practices.

  2. Acquire the knowledge of sanitation and disinfection as related to all phases of hair and skin.

  3. Acquire knowledge of general theory relative to barbering including anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and theory.

  4. Acquire business management techniques common to barbering operations.

SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED

  1. Learn the proper use of implements relative to all barbering services.

  2. Acquire the knowledge of analyzing the scalp, and face, before all services are done, to determine any disorders.

  3. Will learn the procedures and terminology used in performing all barber services.

  4. Will learn the proper procedure shaving and hair cutting.

  5. Will learn hair styling, hair coloring, shaving, beard design, etc.

 

 

ATTITUDES AND APPRECIATION'S TO BE DEVELOPED

  1. Be able to appreciate good workmanship common to Barbers.

  2. Possess a positive attitude towards the public and fellow workers.

  3. Appreciate honesty and integrity.

  4. Have improved "people skills" in dealing with patrons and colleagues

REQUIREMENTS FOR SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF COURSE

Shall have completed Theory and Operations required by the Barbering and Cosmetology Program with a grade average of "C" (75%) or better.

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Complete: 1000 hours - Barbering

    *Applied effort as mandated by the state of California And The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology

  • Complete all, and/or over, the minimum requirements in regards to theory and operations as indicated on your weekly timecard.

  • Pass a written and practical final test with a 75% or better

  • View specified educational videos from your video list/assignment sheets, (approx. one per wk.)

  • Complete theory workbook.

  • Complete all (practical operations) assignment sheets prior to scheduled evaluations.

  • Prepare a photo portfolio with at least 15 photos of your "finished" work, (on going project)

  • Prepare a typed resume with cover letter.

 

 

YOUR PROGRESS IN SCHOOL AND YOUR "COURSE WORK" LISTED WILL BE REVIEWED DURING SCHEDULED QUARTERLY EVALUATIONS. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO MAINTAIN SATISFACTORY PROGRESS IN THESE AREAS WILL BE PLACED ON PROBATION.

 

 

SAP EVALUATION POLICY

(English and Spanish Program: based on a 28 hours per week attendance)

Evaluations will determine if the student has met the minimum requirement for satisfactory academic progress. The frequency of evaluations ensures that the student has had at least one (1) evaluation by midpoint in the course.

​

A barber will be evaluated at the following intervals:

  • The point at which 33% of the course is scheduled to be completed, (450 hours)

  • The point at which 66% of the course is scheduled to be completed, (900 hours)

  • The point at which 100% of the course is scheduled to be completed, (1000 hours)

  • And, the point of actual completion, or at which each additional 25% block of hours is scheduled to be completed, beyond graduation date.

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must be 17 years of age or older and have completed the 10th grade. A Barbers license will be granted by the State of California only after the student has successfully completed and graduated from the Barbers course as described above and passed the licensing exam with an overall average of 75%.
